When I start up my rig the PSU makes a horrid whirring noise. Goes for about five minutes and then quietens down. I have a OEM 500w ATX PSU. Should I look at getting it replaced or will it be okay? I have had this PSU since July 2010. Thought it would last longer than it has.

Ideas?

sounds like the fan in the PS I would defiantly get a new one asap if that things takes a crap it could take the rest of the pc with it. corsair makes a good PS and the price point is not that high I would go with a bigger wattage just in case you want to upgrade the video card at some point then you wont have to worry

This is the Corsair I got for my rig last year. Like Briggs said, if you get it strong enough, you can transfer it to your next computer...

Mac, are you sure it's the PSU, or the CPU fan? Or some other case fan?

Noisy fan does not really mean it's going bad, as long as it's still spinning.

Sometimes blowing compressed air in the fan will clear out debris which
may be causing the noise.

It's definitely coming from the PSU. I took the side of the case, removed the gfx card and turned on the PC. The noise is definitely coming from the PSU. I have blasted it out with compressed air, a bit of dust came out. The noise is still present however. It mainly occurs when I turn the PC on. It may do it sometime while its on however. As I am typing this, I can hear what I believe to be the fan in the PSU spinning quietly, there is no loud noise. However, this could be one of the other fans that I am hearing.

Rig is running okay ATM, but I am backing up important stuff just in case. I can't wait til August when my tax return is in and I can get my new rig. This one is for the kids.

If the noise is annoying, for me that would be enough of
a reason to change it, especially if it's an aging PSU anyway.

I have seen some knuckleheads on the internet disassemble
the power supply units to add 2 drops of oil to the fan spindle
to stop the noise. HOWEVER, PSUs have some VERY LARGE
capacitors, and they hold a charge for a long time after
they've been turned off and unplugged. So it's very risky
unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing. Even then,
I'd just replace it.

So I wouldn't advise anyone to take one apart to
do this. As this would be a temporary solution anyway.

So, simply, a noisy fan does not mean the power supply
unit is not functioning, but if it's annoying enough just
replace it.
