My oldest son is interested in buying a laptop for himself. He wants to be able to run Minecraft, but it should be fairly versatile overall. We have enough gaming hardware in the house, I don't see him using it for other FPS stuff. RIght now he's looking at a half price Acer Aspire V3 15.6" Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5-3210M / 500GB HDD / 8GB RAM / Windows 8) . It includes Intell HD 4000 Graphics. Not high end, but aparently should run Minecraft. I have no experience with laptops, and am wondering if anybody else has any advice.

Thanks!
Heater

I always recommend Toshiba, Sony, Asus, and Acer.

The Asus and Acer brands are nice and usually cheaper.
The Sonys tend to be a bit pricier.

The Toshibas are good, and cheaper than the Sonys.

Is he buying it in a store? I'd have the rep download and run Minecraft on it.
It's hard to say with Minecraft and Laptops. I've had some laptops that I
would bet could run Minecraft, and didn't. And vice versa.

I would think that the HD 4000 should run it.

Boose runs on a laptop sometimes I think. Maybe he will weigh in with the specs and performance issues.

I thought the Lenovo Think Pad had a great rep. Too expensive?

Well Minecraft is a really hard game to run despite its "simplified" graphics. Most PCs won't run the game well or at all without a gaming grade GPU/CPU and lots of RAM.

I downloaded Optifine to help fine tune my graphics settings and stuff. It helped a lot. I can pull about 80-100 FPS running MC and that is on "Normal" draw distance. I think the game is perfect at normal. If I enable Far draw distance it drops to about 35-40 FPS! Plus I think it looks horrible. Too much to look at. I have anti-aliasing and stuff all the way up and texture smoothing all the way up. Graphics on fancy and all animations up etc..... Optifine may be a good install. It adds many more graphics options to the game so you can get better performance on a slower computer.

Yeah that i5 should do nicely, With Minecraft the RAM is more important I believe, I can run it on a lesser laptop (be it with some stuff turned off)
